Researchers have discovered a deep saltwater ocean on one of the many small moons that orbit Saturn, leading scientists to conclude it is the most likely place in the solar system for extraterrestrial life to be found. Gravitational field measurements taken by Nasa's Cassini space probe revealed that a 10km-deep ocean of water, larger than Lake Superior, lurks beneath the icy surface of Enceladus at the moon's south pole. David Stevenson, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said the body of water was so large it "may extend halfway or more towards the equator in every direction. It might even extend all the way to the north." The presence of a saltwater ocean a billion kilometres from Earth more than satisfies Nasa's long-held mantra of "follow the water" to find signs of alien life, but water is not the only factor that makes Enceladus such a promising habitat. The water is in contact with the moon's rocky core, so elements useful for life, such as phosphorus, sulfur and potassium, will leach into the ocean. The first hint that Enceladus might harbour a subterranean ocean came in 2005 when Nasa's Cassini spacecraft photographed extraordinary jets of water vapour blasting out of fissures in the moon's south pole. The source of the water was a mystery, and an ocean of liquid water was only one possibility. The latest discovery, reported in the journal, Science, gives scientists the strongest indication yet that the source of water vapour coming from Enceladus is a large body of water underneath the surface of the icy moon. An international team led by Luciano Iess at the Sapienza University in Rome inferred the existence of the ocean after taking a series of exquisite measurements made during three fly-bys between April 2010 and May 2012, which brought the Cassini spacecraft within 100km of the surface of Enceladus. As Cassini sped past the Saturnian moon, researchers used Nasa's Deep Space Network of giant antennas to monitor signals reaching Earth from the spacecraft's onboard radio. They looked for subtle shifts in the frequency of the radiowaves, which revealed whether the spacecraft was speeding up or slowing down. The measuring technique exploits the Doppler effect, which explains why the siren of a police car has a higher pitch as it approaches, and a lower pitch as it heads away.

The items, measuring between one metre and 23 metres in length, were identified around 1,500 miles off the coast of Perth By James Matthews, Sky News Correspondent "Unfortunately, we don't have a scoop for you" - those were the parting words from Australia's Air Force 11 squadron, crew 3, as we stepped off their P3 Orion aircraft following a search for MH370. Every crew operating out of the Pearce air base north of Perth, Western Australia, wants to be the crew that finally locates the missing Malaysian airliner. 11 Squadron are more used to hunting for submarines on behalf of the Royal Australian Air Force. As part of Australia's contribution to the multinational search for MH370, we accompanied them on a mission 1300 miles off the coast of Western Australia. Oceans on monitor The open seas are relayed onto monitors as the plane flies over It was a four hour flight to the 'crash site', where the aircraft's crew searched for three and a half hours. We knew we had arrived at the scene when Captain Peter Moore switched off one of his plane's four propeller engines, a move that saved fuel and prolonged the searching time by half an hour. The advantages of technology in the hunt for MH370 are obvious. Satellite imagery, in particular, has guided the search. Close-up, however, technology's limits are equally clear. Take some of the information fed onto a bank of monitors, the so-called "tech-bar", inside the aircraft. Infrared cameras stream footage of the sea onto screens, as does the plane's radar. Man looking out of plane window Airforce spotters work in shifts of 20 minutes and scan side to side Both systems are effective in the aircraft's usual role of hunting for submarines but in the circumstances surrounding the search for MH370 they are not ideal. Radar cannot penetrate water and so is relying on chancing upon debris protruding above the surface. Infrared cameras pick out sources of heat; the only trouble is that any piece of debris will be as cold as the sea around it. So among all the sophisticated kit involved in this multinational search effort it comes down to the human eye as much as anything else. Trained spotters rotate in 20 minute shifts, the time deemed as an appropriate limit for extreme concentration. They are taught to scan the scene before them from side to side, according to the direction in which they read and write. Our trip with 11 Squadron was the fourth made by the crew on this job and they have modified their approach over time. Malaysia missing plane seach effort The search area is four hours from Australia They scan the sea from a height 700 metres - some aircraft have gone lower but 11 Squadron have found that 700m increases the area they can scan at any one time. It also presents the opportunity for the spotters to get a view straight down - important, they say, for debris they believe is probably resting just beneath the ocean's surface. Looking out of the window of the P3 Orion you gain a clear sense of the challenge facing search teams. When you look out of the domed portholes in the aircraft skin you see a vast expanse of ocean extending far into the horizon. 11 Squadron did make a couple of sightings during their search of 900 square miles - but sadly not of the missing aircraft. The crew spotted some dolphins and a killer whale. No longer are search crews mindful of a miracle - the possibility that someone, somewhere, might be found alive. Crews are now wholly focused on a job that is about recovery and the gathering of evidence. It is also about the bereaved families. In the words of 11 Squadron's Captain Peter Moore, for the victim's loved ones "closure matters". And that is what drives the search of strangers.

Для выпускников, которые имеют право досрочно сдать ЕГЭ, экзамены начнутся 21 апреля. В этот день можно будет сдать русский язык, 24 апреля — иностранные языки, географию, химию, историю, 28 апреля пройдет досрочный ЕГЭ по математике, а 5 мая — по информатике и ИКТ, биологии, обществознанию, литературе и физике. Напомним, что досрочно сдать ЕГЭ разрешено выпускникам школ, которые во время сдачи основной волны уезжают на соревнования, олимпиады, смотры, тренировочные сборы или на лечение. Разрешен досрочный ЕГЭ тем, кто уезжает на учебу или постоянное место жительства за границу. Могут написать тесты досрочно выпускники прошлых лет, призванные на военную службу в основные сроки проведения экзамена. Обычно в досрочную волну ЕГЭ сдают около 1500-2000 человек. Основная волна ЕГЭ пройдет в этом году с 26 мая по 11 июня. Первым экзаменом, 26 мая, будут география и литература. 29 мая — русский язык, 2 июня — иностранные языки и физика, 5 июня — математика, 9 июня — информатика и ИКТ, биология, история. А в последний день основной волны ЕГЭ,11 июня, можно будет сдать обществознание и химию. Тем, кто имеет право повторно сдать ЕГЭ, а также выпускникам прошлых лет разрешается в 2014 году 8 мая и 16 июля сдать ЕГЭ по любому учебному предмету. Далее расписание будет таким: 16 июня — иностранные языки, обществознание, биология, информатика и ИКТ. 17 июня — география, химия, литература, история, физика. 18 июня — русский язык. 19 июня — математика. 7 июля — русский язык, химия, информатика и ИКТ. 9 июля — математика, география, иностранные языки. 11 июля — обществознание, литература, физика. 14 июля — биология, история. Все экзамены должны начаться ровно в 10 часов утра по местному времени. ЕГЭ по математике, физике, литературе, информатике и ИКТ будет длиться 3 часа 55 минут. По русскому языку, истории, обществознанию — 3 часа 30 минут, по биологии, географии, химии, иностранным языкам — 3 часа.
